Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second step when you sign in: as well as your password, you enter a one-time code from an authenticator app such as 1Password, Google Authenticator, Apple Passwords or Authy. You can register more than one authenticator, and you get a set of backup codes to use if you ever lose access to your apps.

Signed in with a social account? Two-factor authentication needs an account password, and accounts created with a social sign-in (such as Google or Microsoft) don’t have one. When you click Add authenticator, ShiftSync offers to email you a reset link — click Email me a reset link, then follow the link we send you to choose a password. Once that’s done you can add an authenticator as below. (You can still sign in with your social account afterwards; you’ll just be asked for a 2FA code as well.)

Open your security settings

  1. Click Settings in the left sidebar.
  2. Open the Security tab.

Add an authenticator

  1. Under Two-factor authentication, click Add authenticator.
  2. Enter a Name (for example “1Password” or “Pixel phone”) and your Password, then click Continue.
  3. Add the secret to your authenticator app:
    • scan the QR code with the app, or
    • on mobile, tap Add to your authenticator app, or
    • tap Copy to copy the secret and paste it in manually.
  4. Click Next, enter the 6-digit Authentication code from your app, and click Confirm.

The first time you turn on 2FA you’re shown your backup codes — click Copy codes and keep them somewhere safe. You won’t be able to see them again.

Sign in with two-factor authentication

Once 2FA is on, signing in asks for a code after your password. Enter the current 6-digit code from your authenticator app — or one of your backup codes — to finish signing in. Each backup code works only once.

Rename or remove an authenticator

In the Security tab, each authenticator has Rename and Remove buttons.

  • Rename lets you change its name.
  • Remove asks for your password. If it’s your last authenticator, removing it turns off two-factor authentication, so you’ll also be asked for a current code (from the app or a backup code).

Regenerate backup codes

Under Backup codes, click Regenerate backup codes and enter your password. This replaces your existing codes — the old ones stop working — and shows you the new set once.

Turn off two-factor authentication

Under Turn off two-factor authentication, click the button and enter your password and a current code. This removes all your authenticators and backup codes, and you’ll no longer be asked for a code when you sign in.

Lost access to everything? If you’ve lost your authenticator apps and your backup codes, contact support to recover your account.
