A passkey lets you sign in without a password — you confirm with the same Touch ID, Face ID, PIN, security key, or password manager (such as 1Password or iCloud Keychain) you already use on your device. You can add more than one, and each is named so you can recognise it later.

Open your security settings

  1. Click Settings in the left sidebar.
  2. Open the Security tab.

Add a passkey

  1. Under Passkeys, click Add a passkey.
  2. Enter a Name (for example “1Password”, “Work laptop” or “YubiKey”). If your account has a password, enter your Password here too.
  3. Click Create passkey. Your device takes over — confirm with Touch ID, Face ID, your PIN, security key, or password manager.

When it’s done you’ll see Passkey added. and the new passkey appears in the list.

Signed in with a social account? Unlike two-factor authentication, you don’t need a password to add a passkey — just confirm with your device. A passkey is a great way to get a fast, password-free sign-in on a Google or Microsoft account.

Synced vs this-device passkeys

Each passkey shows a badge:

  • Synced — stored in a password manager or keychain (such as iCloud Keychain or 1Password) and available on your other devices signed in to that manager.
  • This device — tied to this one device, such as a hardware security key.

Rename or remove a passkey

Each passkey in the list has Rename and Remove buttons.

  • Rename lets you change its name.
  • Remove takes it off your account. If your account has a password you’ll be asked for it (Enter your password to remove this passkey.). On a password-free social account you’ll instead confirm with one of your passkeys — click Confirm and remove and verify with your device.

You always need a way back in. If a passkey is the only way you can sign in — no password, no other passkey, no connected account — Remove is unavailable and you’ll see This is the only way to sign in to your account. Set a password or connect an account before removing it.

Even when removal is allowed, keep more than one way to get in, so losing one device can’t lock you out.
